Veruccas and warts are caused by viruses on the skin and appear as thick growths on the skin.
Warts are most common on the hands and appear as a tough raised surface. Veruccas are on the soles of the feet and are usually flatter, almost growing into the skin. Some people say that a verucca feels like walking with a small hard object on the sole of your foot.
Genital warts appear on the penis or vagina and are usually very small and do not often cause much discomfort. Genital warts can spread very quickly so visit your GP straight away if you think you may have one.
It seems that some people are more susceptible to the virus that causes warts, perhaps picking it up from direct contact, in changing rooms or swimming pools. It can take some time for your body to develop immunity to the infection which is why a verucca or wart can last for a few years and then disappear.
You can buy removal treatments from your pharmacist – these will work to remove the affected skin. Using a pumice stone can also help to remove the old skin.
