Vaginitis - Prevention

Some types of vaginitis can be prevented by the following:

  • Practice good hygiene: Clean the genital area daily with a mild fragrance-free, non irritating soap. Always rinse soap from the genital area and dry well.

  • Limit baths: Also avoid hot tubs and whirlpool spas.

  • Wear cotton underwear: Wearing underwear that is made from synthetic material and tights with synthetic crotches allows yeast to thrive in the moist environment of the vagina. Underwear should not be worn to bed.

  • Avoid scented sanitary towels and tampons: The chemicals used to add fragrance to these products may irritate the vagina.

  • Wipe form front to back: After using the toilet and especially after bowel movements, the vaginal area should be wiped from front to back to avoid the spread of bacteria to the vagina.

  • Never douche: Douching disrupts the normal flora of the vagina and allows organisms to overgrow, which in turn can cause infections to develop.

  • Consume yoghurt containing lactobacillus cultures: These organisms inhabit the normal flora of the vagina and may discourage or prevent the development of recurrent vaginal yeast infection.

  • Practice safe sex: Condoms should be used to protect against STD’s unless the relationship is a monogamous one in which both partners are free from any infection.
