Most people are aware that foods high in saturated fats will raise cholesterol levels, however the good news is that there are number of heart-friendly foods that have the opposite effect. A study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition demonstrated that a diet filled with cholesterol lowering foods can, in many cases, be as effective as cholesterol medication.
Cravings for certain foods seem to affect us all at some time or another. Unlike hunger, cravings are more specific and more to do with a certain food, often cooked in a specific way.
In August an interesting article was published in the British Medical Journal about whether eating fruit and vegetables reduces the risk of developing type 2 diabetes. The findings of the research, a meta-analysis of six separate studies, seemed to suggest that eating green leafy vegetables (GLV) does indeed reduce the risk of developing type 2 diabetes. To be precise it was reported that eating an additional 122g of GLV is associated with a 14% reduction in risk.
