Watercress Battles Breast Cancer

water_cress_A study conducted by researchers at the University of Southampton has shown that a plant compound found in watercress may suppress breast cancer development by starving the tumor of nutrients.

The research, published in both the British Journal of Nutrition and Biochemical Pharmacology, supports evidence that the watercress compound is able to intercede with the task of a protein that plays a crucial part in cancer development.

Gum disease linked with Alzheimer's Disease

TeethGum disease may increase the risk of cognitive dysfunction associated with Alzheimer's disease (AD). Researchers from New York University  reviewed 20 years of data and combined this with newer findings suggesting a link between gum disease, brain inflammation and AD.

“The research suggests that cognitively normal subjects with periodontal inflammation are at an increased risk of lower cognitive function compared to cognitively normal subjects with little or no periodontal inflammation,” says Angela. Kamer, assistant professor of periodontology and implant dentistry at New York University.

Protein crucial for successful pregnancy

The protein, Preimplantation Factor, “appears to be essential for pregnancy to succeed,” says Michael Paidas, associate professor at Yale University and co-director of the Women and Children’s Center for Blood Disorders.

Dying For Too Little Sleep

Dying_for_too_little_sleepPeople who sleep for fewer than six hours each night are 12 percent more likely to die prematurely than those who get the recommended 6-8 hours, according to a research review.

The study, published in the journal Sleep, also suggests that consistently getting too much sleep (more than 9 hours a night) could be a cause for concern. While it does not in itself increase the risk of death, sleeping too much can be a significant marker of potentially fatal illnesses.

Coffee and Tea May Reduce Risk of Diabetes by up to 25%

Individuals who drink more coffee (regular or decaffeinated) or tea appear to have a lower risk of developing type 2 diabetes, according to an analysis of previous studies reported in the December 14/28 issue of Archives of Internal Medicine.
