White Noise Helps Some Kids Focus

Children_at_schoolInattentive children focus better in class when white noise is being played, a group of researchers Stockholm and Lund University has discovered.

Both concentration and memory improved in school children with ADHD when white-noise recordings were played as they worked. Conversely children who are normally attentive found it distracting.

Yo-Yo Dieting Alters Genes Linked With Stress

yoyo_dietStressed-out mice with a history of dieting ate more high-fat foods than similarly stressed mice not previously on diets, according to a new study in the Dec. 1 issue of The Journal of Neuroscience.

The findings suggest that moderate diets change how the brain responds to stress and may alter genes related to stress and eating.

Mindfulness meditation found to be as effective as antidepressants to prevent depression relapse

Meditation1A new study from the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) has found that mindfulness-based cognitive therapy--using meditation—provides equivalent protection against depressive relapse as traditional antidepressant medication.

The study published in the current issue of the Archives of General Psychiatry compared the effectiveness of pharmacotherapy with mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT) by studying people who were initially treated with an antidepressant and then, either stopped taking the medication in order to receive MBCT, or continued taking medication for 18 months.
