New Mouthwash Targeting Harmful Bacteria May Render Tooth Decay a Thing of the Past

Tooth_AcheA new mouthwash developed by a microbiologist at the UCLA School of Dentistry is highly successful in targeting the harmful Streptococcus mutans bacteria that is the principal cause tooth decay and cavities.

In a recent clinical study, 12 subjects who rinsed just one time with the experimental mouthwash experienced a nearly complete elimination of the S. mutans bacteria over the entire four-day testing period. The findings from the small-scale study are published in the current edition of the international dental journal Caries Research.

Maternal Blood Test Detects Fetal Genetic Problems

Maternal_Blood_TestA simple maternal blood test can accurately detect both fetal genetic problems and sex as early as seven weeks into pregnancy, according to a new study. The test, which has been around for years, can detect certain sex-linked medical conditions.

It screens for hemophilia, typically found in boys; congenital adrenal hyperplasia, a recessive condition that can result in girls having masculine-like genitalia and boys entering puberty at the age of two or three years old; or those fetuses with ambiguous genitalia.

CT_Scanner_SafetyAlthough computed tomography (CT) scans can help physicians readily and easily assess patients, ultimately enabling them to make diagnoses quickly, their use has significantly increased in the last decade, causing some to wonder whether the risks associated with radiation exposure outweigh those benefits.

CT use among emergency patients alone increased 330% from 1996 to 2007, according to a study conducted by University of Michigan researchers (PDF).
