Natural Treatments for Laryngitis

natural_treatments_for_larynigitisLaryngitis happens when your voice box (larynx) becomes swollen or inflamed. Symptoms of laryngitis include a sore throat and a horse, husky voice, or in its most severe form partial or complete voice loss.

There are primarily two types of laryngitis:

Acute laryngitis is caused by infection or damage to the larynx, often through overuse (too much talking or singing) or prolonged coughing.
Chronic laryngitis can be caused by smoking, alcohol misuse, gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD) and various allergic reactions.

If you have laryngitis one of the best things you can do is to remain silent as much as possible. This means not even whispering. Whispering can place as much strain on the vocal cords as shouting. As well as resting your voice there are a number of soothing remedies you can try.

Natural Treatments for Acute Laryngitis

Don't clear your throat

  • Resist the urge to cough or clear your throat as much as possible. Both of these can place strain on your vocal cords. Try to suppress the feeling by sipping water or by swallowing.

Coat your throat

  • Drink at least 6-8 glasses of warm or lukewarm water per day. Fluid keeps your larynx moist which is vital to encourage healing. Other liquid like thin chicken broth can also help.

  • Fresh ginger can help soothe inflamed mucous membranes of the larynx. Suck on a piece of dry candied ginger or try drinking ginger tea. You can make ginger tea by dropping one ginger root (thinly sliced) into a pot of boiling water, turn the heat down low and allow it simmer for around thirty minutes. Let cool, strain and drink half a cup three or four times per day. Ginger tea is also commonly available from most supermarkets.

  • Herbs such as white horehound and Aaron's rod tea can also help. Horehound is a member of the mint family and is often used in cough sweets. Aaron's rod contains gelatinous mucilage which can help to soothe irritated tissue. To make either tea put 1 or two teaspoons of the dried herb into a cup of boiling water. Allow it to steep for around ten minutes and then strain.

  • An old folk remedy for laryngitis is to drink 2 teaspoons of onion juice followed by one teaspoon of honey. You can repeat this every three hours. If you don't have a juicer squeeze half an onion between to plates to extract the juice.

  • Try mixing a tablespoon of honey, some lemon juice and a pinch of cayenne pepper and sip the mixture throughout the day.

Kill the bugs

  • Garlic contains the antimicrobial substance allicin. If you (and your partner) can handle strong garlic breath, slice a garlic clove down the middle and place half clove on either side of your tongue. Suck on the cloves for ten to fifteen minutes (or as long as you are able to).

  • A saltwater gargle helps heal infected and inflamed vocal cords and sore throats. Add 1/2 teaspoon salt to 1 cup warm water and gargle. You can repeat this a number of times each day but make sure you don't use too much salt.

  • Vinegar is a weak acid and can help eliminate some bacteria. Mix equal amounts of water and vinegar and gargle two to three times a day.

Steam your throat and voice box

  • Inhale steam from a bowl of hot water for five minutes two to four times per day. To help trap the steam, place a towel over your head, making a tent over the bowl. The steam will help to restore lost moisture from your throat and accelerate healing.

  • You can also add a few drops of an antiseptic and anti-inflammatory essential oil, such as lavender, chamomile or sandalwood to the water.

How to prevent laryngitis

  • Breathe through your nose. Your nasal passages are natural humidifiers. Constantly breathing through your mouth exposes your voice box to dry cold air.

  • Use a humidifier in your bedroom or stand a bowl of water on the radiator. Your vocal chords are lined with a mucous that needs to remain moist.

  • When flying chew a piece of gum or suck lozenges. Cabin air is notoriously dry. You can also hold a damp cloth or flannel over your mouth periodically to moisten the air passing through your airways.

  • Check with your doctor is you are on any medication that can cause hoarseness. Certain medications such as blood pressure drugs, thyroid medications and antihistamines can be very drying.

  • If you smoke – quit. It's a major cause of sore and dry throats, as well as many other problems.
