Loss of Libido and Sexual Symptoms
Complex biological, emotional and social factors influence sexual behaviour. Sexual difficulties, which may include low sexual response, discomfort during intercourse, reduced libido and loss of interest in the sexual partner are common during the menopausal years.
Oestrogen when plentiful maintains the size, shape, lining and flexibility of the vagina. It also profoundly influences the vagina’s response to touch, through it’s effect on sensation, lubrication and blood supply. Insufficient oestrogen can cause changes that make intercourse uncomfortable, painful o even impossible. Other effects include difficulty in achieving orgasm.
An understanding partner will appreciate that vaginal dryness associated with the menopause will take longer to overcome and during foreplay. But if the difficulties are more severe it may be worth talking to you doctor so they can be dealt with at an early stage.
Local oestrogen treatments can be very helpfulfor severe vaginal dryness. They also improve the general tone of the pelvic floor. Simple over the counter lubricants can be helpful in alleviating minor vaginal dryness.
However by no means will all women need HRT to maintain good sexual function after the menopause. An active sex life in itself plays a major role in keeping the sexual organs in good condition.
