Page 1 of 5 Menopause, the absence of a menstrual period for 12 months, marks the end of menstruation and fertility in a woman. The Menopause is a normal physiological process occurring at an average age of 51 years. Although you may experience many distressing symptoms, remember that it is not an illness. Several options, ranging from lifestyle changes to hormonal therapy, are available to reduce your symptoms and improve the quality of your life. As well as the eventual cessation of menstruation, common symptoms include; irregular mensrual bleeding, hot flushes and sweating, sleep disturbances, changes in the vagina and psycological changes. Treatments range from Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) to medical treatments as well as numerous alternative treatments that can help manage the symtpoms. What is Perimenopause?The term ‘perimenopause’ is used to define the time around the transition into menopause. Even though you are still menstruating, you may begin to experience the signs and symptoms of menopause, such as irregular bleeding and hot flashes. Also referred to as climacteric, this condition may last four to five years.
