Let's Get Physical!

For many of us, exercise can seem like a mountain to climb. Our school experiences, images of exhausted marathon runners and adverts featuring young toned bodies can make us feel that exercise requires dedication, is really just hard work and there aren’t enough hours in the day. The reality is that we are surrounded by opportunities to be active in our daily lives, all it takes is a different perspective on the activities that we already do.
Better than nothing
Although benefits vary with the intensity of the movement, getting hot and sweaty and out of breath isn’t always necessary. When compared to being sedentary, any form of physical activity will bring about health benefits.
A good starting point is to look at how you spend your day. Building exercise into your schedule doesn’t have to mean a great change to your routine. Try to take at least 30 minutes of aerobic-type exercise a day. It’s the kind of activity that leaves you feeling slightly warm and breathing a little harder than usual.
If 30 minutes seems a lot, try splitting your activity into 3, ten minute bursts throughout the day.
Bite Sized Bits
Why not walk up the stairs instead of taking the lift? Try parking your car at a car park further from the town centre or your office than you normally would, or get off the bus one or two stops earlier. If you carry home a couple of shopping bags you could be strengthening your arms at the same time.
A great workout is to forgo the car wash and hand wash your car – you may discover muscles you have forgotten about. And you could always resist your TV remote control and manually change channels!
It may seem silly but little things will all add up and have you feeling fitter in not time. Remember it’ being more active that counts.
Next Steps
If you do want to be more adventurous, your local community council should have plenty of information about short walks, cycle routes, leisure activities and green spaces in your area. You may even be inspired to help others with a sponsored walk, swim or fun run.
Every journey begins with one step, and on the road to becoming active that really is the case. Being active makes you feel and look better and you may be surprised at how easy it is to get started.
