What to Expect After Laser Eye Surgery
After your surgery is complete, you may experience mild pain, burning, itching, watery eyes or blurry vision. You will probably be given antibiotic and steroid drops to put in your eyes to prevent infections and help them heal properly. You should avoid rubbing your eyes, and you may be told to replace the protective bandages over your eyes when you go to sleep so you don't rub or bump them accidentally.
Typically, you'll return to see your doctor 24 hours after surgery to check your vision and examine your surgical site. You'll need to rest for at least a day after surgery, and you'll have to wait a few days before returning to non-contact sports. Your doctor will tell you when you can resume contact sports, but expect to take at least 4 weeks off from these activities. You'll need to avoid makeup, creams and lotions around the eye for up to two weeks. You'll also need to stay out of pools and hot tubs for at least a month. It is important to protect your eyes from anything that might get in them or bump and injure them while they are healing, and to follow all of your doctor's instructions.
Keep in mind that it may take several months for your vision to stabilize after surgery. You might experience dryness, halos, glare or problems with night vision during this time period. Many of these problems are temporary and resolve themselves over time. You will be asked to return for follow up visits to your eye doctor as you heal to assess your vision.
