Online Health Insurance
Buying health insurance can be a complex and daunting process, especially for first-time buyers. But it needn't be. Buying insurance online can be easy and simple, if you know what you are looking for… and where to look. Here we'll help you find a suitable online insurance company, explain how to find a plan that fits your needs, as well as detail the process of applying for online health insurance.
Where to look and what to watch out for
A simple Internet search for "online health insurance" can overwhelm you with the amount of information returned. And if you're not careful, you can fall victim to any number of Internet scams. Before selecting an online insurance site, do your due diligence to ensure it is a reputable company. You should also make sure the site you choose gives you the option to speak with an agent should you have any questions along the way.
You needn't simply select a plan by company. There are plenty of sites that offer plans from different insurance companies, which means you have more options to choose from when it comes to your cover needs as well as your budget. Once you select a health insurance site, the process of selecting your plan can begin.
Policy process
Most sites will ask you to submit simple criteria (name, age, number/age(s) of dependents, etc.). Then you will gain access to a sampling of plans to chose from based upon those criteria.
When reviewing policies online, keep your/your families needs in mind. Online health insurance plans will typically cover treatment for acute medical conditions, medical consultations, in-patient testing, and surgery, hospitals stays, theatre time and nursing. Some plans also cover outpatient tests and consultations, overseas cover, and cash payment for treatment received as an NHS in-patient. There are also many conditions and treatments that are typically not covered such as pre-existing conditions, general practitioner as well as Accident and Emergency visits, HIV/AIDS, normal pregnancy, dental care, infertility and cosmetic treatment. Thoroughly review the plan you are interested in to ensure you understand exactly what is and is not covered.
Once you've found a plan that fits your needs, you can apply for it online. You will be asked to submit an online application form that includes detailing your and your family's medical history as well as basic demographic information.
Application process
The insurance company will then review your application via either moratorium underwriting or full medical underwriting. The former does not require a physical exam or completion of a medical questionnaire. But the insurance company will not cover any pre-existing condition that has required medical attention within the last five years. The latter involves completing a medical questionnaire, and the insurance company will contact your general physician to review your medical history. Be aware that if you have a pre-existing condition, the insurance company may choose not to accept your application.
Once the application is accepted, the insurance company will return details of the policy to you (likely via email). Once again, it's your responsibility to review everything to ensure this plan is exactly what you want before signing anything. The insurance company will then advise you as to when your policy goes into effect.
Cancellation grace period
After you receive your insurance plan documents, which will describe in full your policy limitations and rules, you have at least a 14-day grace period in which you can decide if this plan is indeed suitable for your needs. You can cancel your policy during this time frame without penalty, and you will receive reimbursement of any payments you may have already made unless you made a claim within that time.
