Hayfever - Prevention

Prevention / Self – help

Although it is virtually impossible to completely avoid known allergens like pollen, taking some preventive measures will help you reduce your exposure. Keep an eye on the pollen count and observe the following when the count is high:

  • Remain indoors as far as possible, especially on dry, windy days.

  • Keep doors and windows shut, especially early morning and late evening.

  • Get an allergy grade air filter installed if symptoms are severe.

  • Avoid the countryside since pollen is carried inland by sea breeze.

  • Refrain from drying clothes and bedding on the clothes-line.

  • Pollen can stick to these and be carried indoors.

  • Use sunglasses when outdoors and a face mask while gardening.

  • Mow lawns and rake leaves only if you must.

  • Keep your windows rolled up and switch on the air conditioner in your car.

  • Keep a safe distance from your pets as they may carry pollen in their fur.
