Love Your Liver!

Did you know that our entire blood supply filters through the liver at the rate of three pints a minute? Our fabulous liver performs important liverfunctions that we probably never even think about. Weighing in at a whopping three pounds, it is our largest internal organ. We maintain the filters in our car, washing machine and dishwasher but amazingly we neglect our body’s filter.

What does your liver do?

Your liver filters out harmful toxins from your food and the air (pollution) and deals with them. It screens your blood for bacteria, deals with the alcohol you drink and stores energy in the form of glycogen for your muscles. So you can see that your liver has a very important role in keeping you healthy. However, your liver function is compromised every time you drink alcohol. The liver is able to deal with about one drink an hour, depending on a person’s body size and food intake. If more alcohol arrives in the liver than the enzymes (alcohol dehydrogenase) can handle, the excess alcohol travels to all parts of the body, circulating until the liver enzymes are finally able to process it. This is when you feel the full effect of the alcohol and it doesn’t wear off until your liver has dealt with it. So if you have, say, eight drinks, it will take around eight hours for your liver to deal with it all and get it out of your body.

Dealing with alcohol in this way causes damage by changing liver cell structure, which impairs the liver’s ability to help in the digestion of fats. This explains why heavy drinkers tend to develop fatty livers. Though alcohol affects every organ of the body, it’s most dramatic impact is upon the liver. The liver is normally pretty tough, but it can certainly use a bit of extra support and some TLC.

So what to do?

I recommend you take a high quality herbal supplement regularly for liver maintenance. Herbal Medicine has some very effective liver herbs, which have been scientifically proven to help protect the liver, boost liver function and, best of all, help restore damaged liver cells. These herbs can help counteract the harmful actions of alcohol on the liver and there are over 300 scientific studies to prove this. So definitely a must for the medicine cabinet!

My patients use this approach on a regular basis, if they drink alcohol a few times a week or more. The herbal tablets can also be taken as a preventative treatment to help protect the liver, helping it to cope with Christmas, weddings and parties if you start taking it a month before. Patients have noticed how much more energised they feel, once they boost their liver function in this way and it’s completely safe.
