Eczema Patients Prefer New Emollient Cream

A new product from the labs of Pierre Fabre Dermatologie has proven very popular with sufferers of dry skin conditions due to its non-greasy formula.

The new topical emollient and moisturising cream Dexeryl®, from Pierre Fabre Dermatologie, was launched last month. Proven to be most effective, patients were found to considerably prefer using Dexeryl®.

Dry skin conditions like ichthyosis and eczema are incredibly common in the UK with atopic eczema affecting a fifth of school-age children. Patients’ basic treatment involves a regular daily application of emollient.

Dr David Paige, chairman of the Ichthyosis Support Group’s Medical Advisory Board explained, “Sticky, messy or difficult-to-apply eczema treatments will simply not be used as often as they should be so the patient's skin condition can easily get out of control."

Usually the greasiest emollient is said to be the best to use but patients prefer to have a range of creams since a lighter application may be more practical and comfortable during the day.

However, Bao-Tam Phan, UK marketing and training manager and pharmacist at Pierre Fabre Dermatologie, commented on Dexeryl®'s formulation: "The combination of glycerol, which improves the stratum corneum elasticity and white, soft paraffin and liquid paraffin in Dexeryl® offers a highly acceptable non-sticky and non-greasy formulation, which patients in our trials significantly prefer."

The condition eczema or dermatitis is described as a chronic, prickly skin rash. Eczema causes patches of the top layers of skin to become inflamed, dehydrated, cracked and hardened. There are several different kinds of eczema, but the most commonly known is atopic dermatitis. Eczema is incredibly common and affects between 10 and 20 per cent of school children and approximately five per cent of adults in the United Kingdom.

The condition usually has a hereditary factor to it, although other things such as specific foods (such as nuts, and dairy and wheat products) and typical allergens (eg. pollen, pet hair, poison ivy) can trigger it, especially in children.

Although eczema is not a pleasant condition, it is not possible to catch it from other people, the symptoms can be managed, and many children soon ‘outgrow’ it.
