Many people suffer from diarrhoea and/or vomiting at some time in their lives. Diarrhoea and Vomiting are not diseases themselves but symptoms that can have many possible causes.
Causes of Acute Diarrhoea and Vomiting
Viruses: Most cases of diarrhoea and vomiting are caused by viruses of one sort or another. Viruses are eaily passed on from person to person and it is hard to stop someone from catching a virus. Simple precautions like washing your hands after going to the toilet and before food preparation, can help to prevent the spread of an infection.
Bacteria: Sometimes diarrhoea and vomiting are caused by food poisoning that occurs when you eat food contaminated with a bacteria. That bacteria may get into the food (especially mil and chicken) during preparation or storage. Bacteria can also grow on prepared food if it is left in a warm place for too long.
Other causes: Diarrhoea and vomiting can also be caused by eating too much rich or greasy food, drinking too much alcohol, or by certain medications eg some antibiotics. Chronic or recurring diarrhoea may be due to medical conditions like bowel disease. Pregnancy, migraines and travel sickness can also cause vomiting. Signs and
Symptoms of Diarrhoea and Vomiting
Diarrhoea is an increased frequency of bowel movements with loose watery stools. You may find you need to rush to the toilet often feeling a sense of urgency. You may also get stomach cramps, flatulence and feel generally unwell.
Diarrhoea can last up to three days.
Vomiting can occur on its own or at the same time as diarrhoea. It can last for up to six hours or more.
Both diarrhoea and vomiting can cause serious discomfort and may leave you feeling weak, due especially to the loss of fluids.
