Diabetes - Adults - What does it all mean?

Gettting things in Perspective...

Your diabetes diagnosis means there are some immediate changes you need to make.

You’ll be monitoring your blood glucose and adjusting what, and when you eat, planning how and when you exercise. To control your blood glucose level you may also be told to inject insulin or incretin hormone or take tablets and change your diet and take more exercise.

These changes may seem a little overwhelming. You may feel anxious, resentful or even depressed.

But it’s important to keep things in perspective.

Life goes on

As those who have been managing their diabetes for a while will tell you, life really does go on. In fact, it goes on pretty much as normal.

You can still work. You can continue to drive (once you’ve notified the DVLA and your insurer). You can play sport and exercise. You can go out socialising or travel. If you’re sensible, you can still sample your favourite food treats – and even enjoy the occasional drink.

If you need it, ask for support

Managing diabetes means adjusting your lifestyle. At first, coping can leave you feeling overwhelmed and isolated. If you’re feeling worried or down, talk to those who can help.

Both your nurse and doctor will have first hand experience of helping patients adjust. There is also access to psychologists who can help and support you. And talking concerns through with family and friends will also help to put things in perspective.

Diabetes Counsellors

The charities Diabetes UK and Diabetes Federation of Ireland offer free support including access to counsellors with an understanding of depression.
