Liposculpture
The key benefit of liposculpture is that it can be used to permanently reshape and contour your body, removing localised fatty deposits, without having to make surgical wounds that may scar.
The procedure is designed to remove unwanted fat bulges and contour irregularities in areas that are out of proportion with the rest of the body. These are fat deposits that are resistant to dieting and exercise.
The procedure is chiefly used to remove fatty deposits around the abdomen, hips, buttocks and thighs.
How is liposculpture done?
Modern liposculpture uses a ‘tumescent’ technique rather than the previous ‘dry’ liposculpture technique. Tumescent liposculpture uses large quantities of warm saline mixed with vasoconstrictor (to decrease blood flow) and local anaesthetic injected through very small incisions into the areas to be treated. This decreases blood loss and pos op pain and makes the operation technically easier than the previous dry technique.
A liposuction cannula – a long, thin, hollow tube – is inserted into the areas that require treatment, into the fatty layer beneath the skin. As the cannula is moved back and forth, it suctions out the fat cells, removing fat deposits and reconstructing the body.
When the surgeon is satisfied that the area is adequately contoured, the procedure is repeated through the next incision. Depending on the amount of treatment required, the procedure takes between one-and-a-half to three hours.
Is Liposculpture right for me?
Liposculpture is best suited to people who are able to maintain a stable weight and who have reasonable skin tone. The perfect candidate would have no significant fluctuations in their weight but is concerned about fatty deposits that do not respond to diet or exercise.
Having form, elastic skin is also beneficial. Skin that is very slack or lacks recoil can cause problems with this procedure as it may not ‘recontour’ to the new body shape and excess loose skin may be more unappealing than the extra fat.
Liposuction Will
Treat localized areas of fatty deposits. The most common areas are the upper thighs, buttock and abdomen. Fatty deposits in these areas can be inherited conditions and may not respond well to diet and exercise. The only way to permanently reduce these deposits is to remove the fat cells causing the bulging tissue.
Liposuction will be a permanent solution to problem fatty areas, providing that the patient maintains a healthy weight regime post operatively.
Liposculpture Will Not
Work as a treatment for general obesity. Weight stability is very important. This is because although liposuction will permanently remove fat cells, patients must watch their diet/exercise/lifestyle balance in order to maintain the surgically achieved shape. Otherwise fat may be deposited in some of the remaining fat cells causing a cobblestone effect.
Liposculpture will not remove stretch marks, dimpling or other skin anomalies.
Occasionally it may be possible to remove excess skin at the end of a liposculpture procedure. Usually however and alternative procedure to liposculpture is required.
