Collagen Injections
Collagen injections have been around for a long time and were at one time the most common non-surgical cosmetic treatment. While still widely used their popularity has decreased slightly with the introduction of hyaluronic acid fillers and other dermal fillers which can last longer.
Collagen injections are used to remove or reduce crow’s feet, smile lines, nasolabial folds (under the nose) and frown lines.
Collagen plays an important role in maintaining the support network of the skin. It’s a protein and makes up about 80% of the skin. As we age collagen breaks down resulting in lines and wrinkles. By injecting collagen into the dermal layer we are simply replacing natural levels of collagen and restoring a fuller more youthful appearance.
There are a number of variations of collagen available ranging from human based collagen, which is biocompatible, to bovine based (derived from cows) collagen. You will need to undergo an allergy test prior to treatment in order to use a bovine based collagen filler.
Are collagen injections right for me?
Most people who undergo collagen treatment are female and between the ages of 30-65 years old. It is not uncommon for males to seek treatment.
Most people can receive human based collagen injections. However before using bovine based collagen you will need to undergo an allergy test. Around 3% of the population are allergic to bovine based collagen. The allergy test involves injecting a small amount of collagen into the forearm and watching for a reaction over one month.
Allergic reactions include; rash, joint ache and muscle pain, headaches, blistering and soreness.
Pregnant and nursing women should not receive collagen injections.
Is collagen treatment painful?
While treatment involves a number of small pricks and may be a little uncomfortable, there should not be any pain involved. Treating the lip area may be more uncomfortable and an anaesthetic can be applied.
Injections to other areas of the face do not usually require and anaesthetic.
The injection procedure
Before you start your doctor will examine your face and lips to determine the ideal injection sites. He or she may mark your face with a pencil.
Collagen is then injected, using a very fine needle, into the dermal layer of skin. Several injections points may be needed for each treatment area or focus.
The whole process should take between 30 and sixty minutes.
After collagen injections
You will notice the effects of the injections immediately but best results can usually be seen after about one week. The injection areas may be little red and slightly swollen straight after treatment, but this should disappear over the next two days. Some redness may remain for about a week.
How long will the effects on collagen injections last?
Collagen injections typically last for four to six months. Collagen is absorbed into the skin and top up treatments will be required. As more of the collagen remains behind with each treatment the effects of top up treatments can last longer and in some cases a lifetime.
Are the any potential complications with collagen injections?
Collagen injections are considered to be a safe and effective treatment for fine lines and wrinkles. Complications are extremely rare and may include infection and ulcers. Allergic reactions are now very uncommon due to allergy testing before bovine based collagen injections.
How much do collagen injections cost?
The cost of collagen injections will vary depending on the extent of your treatment. Collagen lip treatment usually costs around £250.00.
You will usually be charged per syringe which ranges from between £200-£300. Total procedure costs can go up to £600-£700
