Alcohol does dehydrate the body, but...

"Alcohol dehydrates your body by being flushed out along with water in the form of urine."

Acually, the way in which alcohol dehydrates the body isn't necessarily about taking water with it as it's "flushed" from your system. Alcohol acts as a Central Nervous System (CNS) depressant. As part of it's depressant action, it depresses the ability of your hypothalamus to signal the pituitary to produce ADH- or antidiuretic hormone. This hormone signals the kidneys to reabsorb water. With ADH levels in the blood reduced by the depressant effects of the alcohol, the kidneys do not reabsorb as much water, and more of it ends up being flushed from your body. During a night of even moderate drinking, a person will urinate far more than they normally would, and if they aren't careful to drink plenty of extra water to make up for this, they can wake up dehydrated- which contributes to the feeling we call being "hungover." - Esseffbee

Spend a little more for premium liquors. Not only will you have a better tasting drink, but you'll find that you can usually avoid any manner of hangover or at least the nausea part. - DrZin

It takes me one sip of a Bloody Mary to beat even the worst hangover. Just a sip and I'm PERFECT for the duration.

I don't know if that's just me, but it never fails. - DrZin

Great tips!

Eating after drinking helps me though, when I have a good meal during/after the drinking session, I wake up with little or no hangover. - eli

My hangover remedy is banana and plenty of fluids and a good breakfast if my stomach can handle it. And if the headache persists then take painkillers. and the best tip to avoid a hangover is to never ever mix colours, (ie vodka then whisky) never mix wine, try not to smoke too much while drinking and drink a lot of water before going to bed.
BUT my main problem is dealing with vomiting. Everytime I vomit because my stomach is upset after binge drinking I wake up feeling like death, and I feel sick the whole day. any remedies for upset stomach?? sickness usually lasts for most of the day after - Andry

I read some dutch/german studies that showed that most hangovers are linked to preservatives in many drinks -- which cause amongst other things, common mild allergic reactions in many people, and act as a diuretic (ie. force your bladder into overdrive, in so doing: stress your kidneys, cardiac system, deplete the body of salts / electrolytes / potassium, retain fluid, dizziness, dry eyes, constipation, hypotension, etc).

so, you might want to try switching to keg beer instead of bottled and cutting back on wine intake, (unless you're still sober enough to read the labels for ingredients...) - krzystoff

Hangovers are the absolute worst. Being in my 20's means partying at least 2-4 nights a week which adds up to 2-4 hangovers a week. I wrote about how I deal with hangover on my site http://i-crimson.com/ugh-kill-me-now/. Some of your tips I haven't heard of though and definately have to try them out the next time I do some drinking. - JC

i ALWAYS drink an orange gatorade when i'm hungover, it really helps. My hangover cure is usually a tepid shower, a small glass of orange juice, several litres of water through the day and an orange gatorade. and then vegemite toast if i think i can handle it. sitting in the sun always makes me feel better too. - Olivia
