Did you know that in the United States, 60 million people will be affected by the year 2020 by arthritis. Osteoarthitis has a major influence in the loss of work, economic impact and decrease in quality of life. Osteoarthritis is the number one disease of the joints.

Of all chronic conditions (patients 65 years and older), joint disease accounts for half. The problems of osteoarthritis will only increase as 25% of the world's population will be over 60 years old by 2020

So you are not alone if you suffer from this joint disease.

Who is most at risk?

Osteoarthritis is not hereditary, but the following factors are associated with an increased risk of developing the condition:

  • Obesity. Being overweight for several years can put strain on the joints.
  • Stress on joints caused by one's occupation.
  • Stress on joints caused by activity or ageing.
  • Injury to the joint lining, caused by a past fracture.

Treating Osteoarthritis

No medicine can cure osteoarthritis but they can help to relieve symptoms. You may find over-the-counter painkillers such as paracetamol helpful.

If the pain is more severe, your doctor may prescribe anti-inflammatory medicines known as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) to reduce the inflammation. These are helpful in reducing pain, swelling and stiffness.

With all medicines, you should follow the instructions in the patient information leaflet that comes with your medicine and ask your pharmacist or doctor for advice.
