Back Pain - Prevention

Generally looking after yourself and staying fit and healthy can reduce your risk of back pain.

To look after your back, make sure you:

  • take regular exercise

  •  use a chair with a back rest, and sit with your feet flat on the floor or on a foot rest

  • sleep on a firm mattress

  • use relaxation techniques try to reduce your stress levels

If you often experience back pain you can try the following:

  • Lose any extra weight

  • Try the Alexander Technique

  • Wear flat shoes with cushioned soles

  • Monitor your posture while standing still, sitting and driving

  • Be extremely careful when lifting or handling heavy objects.
