Chiropractic for Back Pain
Chiropractors specialise in treating conditions of the joints, tendons, ligaments and nerves of the body paying close attention to the spine.
According to a study funded by the Medical Research Council and published in the British Medical Journal Chiropractic treatment is more effective in the treatment of back pain than hospital management. (T.W. Meade BMJ Aug 1995; 311: 349 – 351).
Furthermore chiropractic appears relatively cost-effective compared with medical care for the treatment of chronic lower back pain and functional disability improvement. (M. Has J Manipulative Physiol Ther 2005 (Oct); 28 (8): 555–563)
Chiropractors take a holistic approach and the consultation will usually include a thorough physical examination as well as look at diet, lifestyle, exercise programmes. Many will also take an X-ray to identify any problems. This information is used to put together a complete treatment plan. Chiropractic treatment doesn’t involve medication, but is often used alongside conventional pain killers and anti-inflammatory medications.
Chiropractors use their hands to make adjustments designed to improve function and alignment of the joints, thereby helping to relieve pain and improve mobility and the range of movement. Patients often feel more energetic after treatment however some may feel temporary discomfort and stiffness. Treatment sessions usually last between 30 an 60 minutes.
Chiropractic is sometimes available on the NHS system. Private treatment usually costs between £30-£80. Chiropractors are regulated by the General Chiropractic Council (GCC).
The general consensus of research is that chiropractic can be effective in treating low back pain of recent onset and maybe helpful with chronic back pain.
