Coping with anxiety
Living with generalized anxiety disorder can be an uphill task. Excessive worry, fear, and depressive feelings may take their toll on you and adversely affect daily tasks, interpersonal relationships, and the overall quality of your life.
Here are some helpful ways of coping with chronic anxiety:
-
Join an anxiety support group. Sharing your experiences with others may help lighten your burden.
-
Address your worries. Seek professional help and support. Try to find the underlying cause(s) for your anxiety; try to make positive changes to eliminate these reasons. Follow your therapist’s advice and stick with the treatment schedule.
-
Relax. Learn to put aside your worries; practice meditation, yoga, or breathing exercises. Move out of your usual environment or find an absorbing hobby. Avoid indulging in self-pity at your physical and mental state. Do not isolate yourself from those close to you.
-
Look after yourself. Adequate rest, a balanced diet, and exercise are important. Avoid stimulants like caffeine and nicotine, as well as alcohol or off-the-counter drugs.
